Why Bad Hersfeld celebrates Lolls
The festival commemorates Lullus, the founder of Hersfeld Monastery. His death is October 16, 786; the first recorded celebration took place in 852. Therefore, the Lullusfest is considered the oldest folk festival in Germany.

The Fierche as a meeting point
The symbolic focal point is the Lullus fire, called “Fierche” in Hersfeld. It is lit on Lollsmontag at 12 o'clock and remains a visible meeting point during the festive week.
