From the Imperial Abbey to the Festival City
The written history of Hersfeld begins in 736 with a hermitage. In 769, Bishop Lullus of Mainz founded the Benedictine monastery, which Charles the Great raised to the status of an imperial abbey in 775. The abbey shaped the city and region for centuries.
Today, especially the abbey district tells of this story. The mighty walls of the monastery church burned out in 1761 also form the unmistakable backdrop of the Bad Hersfeld Festival.
A good first day in Bad Hersfeld
Start with the abbey ruins and surrounding district, then explore the old town and enjoy a quiet walk in the Kurpark der Jahreszeiten. These sights combine well in one visit; check opening times and events beforehand.
Families find additional destinations with the world of knowledge and experience and the Jahnpark. For longer stays, there are also bike rides on the Fulda as well as day trips to Rotenburg an der Fulda, to the Rhön, to Fulda or Kassel.
