From Monastery to Monumental Ruin
Lullus founded Hersfeld Abbey in 769. After a major fire, rebuilding of the abbey church began in 1038. On his return journey from the Diet of Worms, Martin Luther preached here on 1 May 1521.
The abbey church was gutted by fire in 1761 during the Seven Years’ War. Its surviving walls and arches still reveal its former scale.
Theatre under Romanesque arches
Since 1951, the Bad Hersfeld Festival has transformed the ruins into a large open-air stage. Drama, musical and family plays use the open architecture as part of the staging. Schloss Eichhof is also a regular venue.

Check the visit beforehand
The ruin is not freely accessible at all times. Construction, rehearsals, game operation and dismantling may restrict viewing. The abbey district with Katharinenturm, museum and green areas is still worthwhile as a tour.
