From city moat to city extension
Hainstraße is located on the southern edge of the old town in the area of the former fortification. Between Johannestor and Peterstor the Stadtgraben was filled in 1839. Thereafter, a new transport and development axis developed.
The current streetscape was created in essential parts between about 1860 and 1900. Individual buildings and components have been expanded, rebuilt or reorganized over time.
What is known about Hainstraße 17
The building is listed as a residential property in the published register of cultural monuments and forms part of the historic ensemble. The description identifies cadastral section 44 and plot 9/1.
An exact year of construction is not handed down in the documents evaluated so far. Evidence from existing financial and cadastral archives suggests that parts of the present house were already existed before or around 1881 and were later changed. The year 1881 is therefore a plausible historical classification, not a finally secured year of construction.
Historic exterior, renewed in 2026 on the ground floor
Structured plaster facade, gables, arch motifs and the wooden veranda give Hain 17 its own character. The ground floor was renovated in 2026. The accommodation combines the historical setting with today’s kitchens, bathrooms, natural materials and independent living areas.
